Causes, Prevention, Early Diagnosis and Precision Therapy

The risk of developing cancer is increasing rapidly and cancer is already one of the leading causes of death world-wide. The focus of our interest are the close interrelationships between infection and cancer, in particular since approx. 20% of all cancer deaths in developing countries are caused by virus infections. Gastric cancer is the second most common cancer world-wide and is caused, among others, by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. It is possible that other types of human cancers are also caused by infections. Proving such connections would have immense implications for targeted prevention of pro-cancerous infections. This is difficult, however, in particular because of the long lag that often exists between infection and the development of cancer many years later.

The latest developments of molecular biology raise hopes for revolutionary innovations in early diagnostics and personalized cancer therapy. The Foundation's current funding focus is centered on research into gastric, ovarian and cervical cancer.
